Army List Option #2: Dark Apostle

So having another game under my belt made me tweak my list a bit. Here it is, 1750 points.

Dark Apostle
    -Burning Brand of Skalathrax
    -Veterans of the Long War

20 cultists

5 Chaos Space Marines
    -1 plasma gun
    -rhino with havoc launcher

5 Chaos Space Marines
    -1 plasma gun
    -rhino with havoc launcher

5 Chaos Space Marines
    -1 plasma gun
    -rhino

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh
    -wings
    -power armour
    -black mace

Defiler

Heldrake with Baleflamer

Heldrake with Baleflamer

3 Chaos Spawn
    -Mark of Nurgle

Aegis Defense Line
    -Icarus Lascannon

Chaos Predator
    -Twin Linked Lascannon
    -2 Heavy Bolsters
    -Havoc Launchers
    -Warpflame Gargoyles

The Dark Apostle is going in the Aegis Defence Line with the cultists and the Predator will be behind them.

What do you guys think of this setup?

  1. To me it seems a bit conflicted. You have your dark apostle purposed for assault, yet you want to keep him hidden behind an aegis on las duty. Doesn't seem fair, considering him and 20 of his human buddies want to gut some loyalists like a fish. Also, why only one plasma gun in each of your 5 man rhino squads? top hatch lets you fire two weapons out of it, and in concert with your havoc launcher they'll do some work. I also think you should still consider the comms relay. I can already tell that if both of those helldrakes come on the field by turn 2, the combination of their vector strikes, abusive torrent flamers and your defiler's battle cannon will pave the way for your rhino squads to come take objectives, clean up half dead units, and pretty much win you the game.

  2. Csm units only get one plasma gun per 5 man unit otherwise I would take more.

I see what your saying about the comm, I really think the lascannon is better for me and putting my apostle there will keep the very last cultist there til the end.

  3. I agree with the original post on most points. I (usually) take one decked-out HQ and one vanilla. In my case, it’s a combination of a Lord with the Mark of Slaanesh, to unlock Noise Marines as troops, and a Sorcerer, for Telepathy shenanigans. The Lord is upgraded with a bike and other goodies, the sorcerer gets nothing. For your list, there might be a couple more things you could give the Daemon Prince, but you should be able to run the Dark Apostle stock (saving a lot of points).

You should be able to get a Communication Relay for your defense line for 20 points (that’s what it costs in the Stronghold Assault book anyway). Also, the Quad Gun is superior to the Icarus LasCannon. There’s MathHammer on that if you don’t believe me.

As for your 3 small CSM units in Rhinos, what is your plan for them? If you start them on the board, one or more will get popped on turn one, and then you’ll be foot-slogging across the board anyway. If you are trying to do a rhino rush, then consider dropping the Havoc Launchers. Move your maximum turn one and then go flat out. This way, if it gets popped, you’ll be 24” closer than you were at the beginning. Also consider dropping the plasma guns too and using the points saved to buy more CSM. They’re not Fearless, so more bodies is a good thing. You could also consider keeping all three rhinos in reserves (they are such easy ‘first blood’) and starting your ‘rush’ on turn two, when you’ll have drakes on the table to help take out things that can hurt your rhinos.

    Happy hunting!

    1. The Icarus Lascannon is the way I want to go. I need the ap2 in case I have to deal with centurions again. And I don't believe I can take a comms relay AND a lascannon, so I would rather have the lascannon.

As for the csm in rhinos, I find my opponent usually ignores them and focus fires on my distractionary units. I have yet to have them destroyed, let alone in turn two.
